First and foremeost, when you purchase your first firearm, make sure you have purchase a gun lock of trigger lock for your safety and your family. Secondly, never point your gun at anyone even when it's not loaded unless you are going to use. Thirdly, never point your gun at yourself while cleaning it AND MAKE SURE THE CLIP IS OUT AND THE CHAMBER IS EMPTY. Now, keeping your firearm clean is very important but let's not forget about the lubrication. There are cloth's that you can purchase that you can use that can come with a good firearm cleaning kit. There are gun washers, a non-toxic odorless cleaner that boasts of a 99% cleaner firearm called "Bore clean". They also sell Hoppes elit gun oil, Parker hale express oil, and Napier superclean. When not using your firearm, place it into a plastic ziplock with the inside of the firearm well lubricated, not so much as to make it slippery when you pull it out so it's not useful to you in case of a emergency. Most kits come with a wire brush that fits in the nozzle and the clip area for cleaning. The best way to keep it clean is to understand how to take it apart and clean each pice individually.

Always remember that YOU are the true weapon. 95% of what you need to survive an encounter with a badguy is between the ears IF you are willing to use it. The tool you use, whether a baseball bat or a gun, is merely a tool, [However, a gun makes a really, really nice tool.]
